Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the forum post.
In Password Manager Pro, we manage the resources based on the account type and type of the server. Please find the below mentioned steps for managing the password based on the type of account and windows server you are trying to manage using Password Manager Pro.

Local Accounts(Domain Member servers)
You can then follow below mentioned steps to manage Local account password using PMP on the Domain member servers.
  • Add the end machine with resource type "Windows" and supply the FQDN/IP address in the DNS name field.
  • Edit the Windows resource and make sure "supply credentials" is unchecked.
  • Stop the  PMP service.
  • Navigate to services console. Right Click Password manager pro service and select properties.
  • Switch to the Logon Tab at the top. Change the Local system account to "This Account".
  • Change the Local system account to "This Account". Create a dedicated account which has the privilege to perform Password reset and verification and supply this account for the PMP service.
  • Then start the PMP service. Now try to a reset and verify the passwords .
Local accounts(Workgroup servers)
  • Add the end machine with resource type "Windows" and supply the FQDN/IP address in the DNS name field.
  • Edit the Windows resource and make sure "supply credentials" is selected/checked.
  • Select the local Admin account from the drop down box and click save.
  • Now try to do a reset/verification from PMP
You can also manage the password of both domain and non-domain servers by deploying the agent. Agent needs to be deployed only when you have firewall blockage between the PMP and target system or devices. But, it is not mandatory only for servers behind the firewall. You can also use if for the server to which you have direct connectivity. Here, password reset and verification will be triggered from the agent server. More information about using Agents is available here

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the forum post.
Request you to import the Resources separately based on the OU or Sub OU than trying to import them in a bulk. Please try the below mentioned steps.

1)Navigate to Resources->More Actions->Import from Domain.
2)Provide the appropriate details and leave the last three fields blank.
3)Select Import and you will find PMP to display all the OU and Sub Ou's in your domain.
4)Select the OU's one by one and try the import again.
5)Also, you can turn on the advanced setting to drilled down the OU list till the last level. You can follow the below steps.
  • Stop the PMP Service.
  • Navigate to the <PMP Installation Directory>\conf folder.
  • Open the file system_properties.conf.
  • Search for the entry - #subou.enabled=true
  • Remove the '#' sign in front of this entry.
  • Save the file.
  • Start the PMP service.
Now you can click on the main OU in the enumerated list and the Sub OU will be listed down. You can select the required OU and import into PMP.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the forum post.
1a)Yes, you can copy the entire PMP directory to a new server, do the upgrade to 7600 and then configure MSSQL as backend DB. For this, you to migrate using the migratedb command after the upgrade to 7600 version.
  • Stop PMP service, exit tray icon.
  • Make sure that the mysqld-nt.exe is not running in Task Manager.
  • Using command prompt, navigate to <PMP HOME>\bin folder and execute pmp.bat remove (This will remove Password Manager Pro service)
  • Copy and move entire PMP folder to the 2012 server.
  • Using command prompt, navigate to <PMP HOME>\bin folder and execute pmp.bat install. (This will install Password Manager Pro service)
  • Go to services console and start the service.
  • If you want the tray icon, Go to the <PMP HOME> and double click on pmp.exe.
Please move the encryption key(pmp_key.key) to the new server and specify the correct location inside the manage_key.conf present inside <PMP-home>\conf directory. Please refer  here  for more information about the encryption key.

Upgrade Steps:
The latest version of PMP is 7600. You can download the upgrade packs from here and use the instructions mentioned here to apply the upgrade packs one by one. Please take a backup of the entire PMP directory prior to the upgrade. This way, even if something goes wrong, you can immediately revert back by deleting the entire PMP directory and place the backup in same location to get your PMP up and running again.

After the upgrade, you can migrate the existing data to MSSQL -  https://www.manageengine.com/products/passwordmanagerpro/help/installation.html#migrate

1b)There should not be any compatible issues for CSV import from an older version to the new one.

2)Yes, you can apply the same licence file on your new server. Provided your old installation is stopped or decommissioned within the two days after applying the licence on your new server.

Hi,

Thanks for the post.
Yes. Password Manager Pro should meet your exact requirements. We  have tested the product with 15000 users and 50000 passwords on a standard server and t he number of users and passwords are practically unlimited and it can be extended by improving the Hardware specs of the server in which PMP is installed.

SANS is just a scripting tool to reset the password whereas Password Manager Pro is enterprise password management solution which offers complete password management functionalists.  You can also take a look at the product flyer  here  and the feature list available  here  to know more about Password Manager Pro.

Also, if you can send your contact details to passwordmanagerpro-support@manageengine.com    we will be glad to call you to discuss further regarding your requirements and to setup the demonstration session for you

Hi guys,

This may have been covered elsewhere but I cant see it anywhere obvious.  We run version 7.6 with MySQL backend.

We are planning to test some new functionality and therefore attempting to create a new installation to test this on before putting on live.

When I install the application from the site it appears to install as PostGres, how can I import our current MySQL database

Thanks in advance

Got a reply from support.

The patch for adjusting the RDP screen resolution has been bundled along with the 8000 version of PMP. After upgrading to the latest version and you can just  follow the steps below to enable it.

  • Stop the PMP service.
  • Navigate to PMP/Conf folder.
  • Open the file system_properties.conf with Wordpad or Notepad++.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  • Add new attributes in this file as mentioned in the next point.
  • rdpWidth=<value>  (Ex: rdpWidth= 1365)
  • rdpHeight=<value>  (Ex: rdpHeight= 767)
  • Just make sure that the width and height values are a little bit lesser than your actual screen resolution to allow session recording.
  • Save the file
  • Start the PMP service.

You can Edit the above system property at any point of time to change the screen resolution of RDP sessions.

Arranging Resource Groups

I have started loading PC's into PMP for my company.
I need to rename the initial level in the "Home" tree. It has my user name and then starts the Structure I was working on, which copies the Active Directory structure.

How can I rename or remove the top level that says "USER's NAME" Group?

Thanks

Managing shared Windows AD accounts across resources

$

Hi,

We purchased PMP as a password vault; it's not currently accessible in the same domain where our servers reside. There is no current need for PMP to manage the resetting of passwords directly at this time although we plan to move to this model at some point in the future. At present, we just need a secure way to store, view and manage passwords.

We're having a difficult time trying to structure our system in a way where we can effectively manage our AD accounts. The scenario below:

1. we have created a set of resources as type Windows Domain (essentially Windows servers on AD)

2. we have also created resource groups for these resources.

3. we have added login (domain) accounts on these individual resources.

These domain accounts are shared across machines (resources) but there doesn't appear to be a way to quickly manage these accounts. for example:

a. ability to define AD domain accounts then associate then with resources

b. ability to search for a AD domain account and list all associated machines (resources)

Is there a prescribed method to handle this? It would be painful to have to hand key and manage the same AD domain account across a large number of resources.

Regards

Hi Les,

Thanks for the mail.
Navigate to Resources -> Resources Groups -> Show tree view and click on edit to change the root node name. If you are requirements is form the tree structure, We have two options to form the tree structure and the example diagrams for the same is available in the below link.

First option:  In order to form the tree structure , each and every admins has to construct it. The Tree will be unique for each admin and you cannot have another admin manage your tree. If you have different admin's representing different company/departments, then each admin should name their tree with their company/department name. So you will have to change your Tree name from Resources to your team name. This is one way of using the Tree structure. You can refer this link for more info.

Also, each admin is allowed to have root node under which he/she can have Groups/Sub Groups which will be displayed to the user when a resource groups is shared. The admins can edit the node name and enter their company/department name so that it will not display their name. Navigate to Resources -> Resources Groups -> Show tree view and click on edit to change the root node name. This way, when the resources are shared it will display the Team name instead of their name.

Second Option: You can create a common tree structure for all the users and user will be able to see only the resource groups which are share to them.To enable it, Please navigate to Admin ---> General settings ---> Password retrieval and check the box where it says "Allow all admin users to manipulate the entire explorer tree". In this Global tree structure, the admins(both administrator and password administrator) can drag and drop the resource groups to form the tree structure. So, when another admin adds a resource groups and you want to add a sub group under this resource group, you can simply drag and drop the group in the home tab to form the tree structure. The sharing permissions will not be inherited when you make it as the sub group. The sharing concept will remain the same as in the older versions. Users will be able to only view the groups which are shared to them in the Global tree. Please refer the topic "Allowing Administrators to Manipulate the Nested Resource Group Explorer Tree" from this link for more info.

Hope this helps you. Let us know if you have any further queries.

Thanks & Regards,
Chris

Re : Managing shared Windows AD accounts across resources

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for the forum post.
In PMP, we manage the accounts based on the account type. If you are trying to manage Domain accounts the resource type should be WindowsDomain here you will add your domain controller details. Domain controller details have to manually added. For managing the local accounts of domain member servers, the resource type will be windows. This resource can be added manually or you can use the import from domain option which is available in the Resources Tab -> More actions. So, based on the account you are trying to manage the resource has to be created in PMP.

However, we do have an option to associate a domain account to member servers and login using those credentials. So, you need not add the domain account in each member server. Since, you are only associating the domain account to the member server whenever you reset the password of a domain account the member server will automatically take the new passwords and you need not update them on each member server resource.

In order to associate the domain account, if you edit any one of the windows resource, you will able to see the domain controller in Configure Auto Logon Helper option. Now, you can select one domain account using which you can login to windows server. Also, you should share this domain account alone(not the complete resource) to the domain user so that he can use his domain credentials to login to the windows server.

Additionally, if you are using 7103 or above version there is provision to launch a direct RDP connection with target resources using any domain account that is owned by / shared to the user. In addition, users can opt to use the currently logged in AD account too to connect with the remote resource.

The details of configuring the same is available below.
(Or)

Run the PMP service with a privilege domain account and then, you can use the import from domain under resources tab -> More actions which will automatically import all the domain member server along with local accounts present in it.

Domain Accounts
For managing the Domain account password the resource type is "Windows Domain" and you can follow below mentioned steps to manage domain account password using PMP.
  • Add the Domain controller with the resource type as "Windows Domain"
  • Edit the Windows Domain resources and supply the FQDN/IP address in the DNS Name field and the Domain name in the "Domain Name" field.
  • Add an domain admin account which can perform password reset on other account under this resource.
  • In the supply credentials, make sure that domain admin account is selected.
  • Then try performing the password reset and verification.
  • Also, you can run the PMP service with a dedicated domain account which has the privilege to perform password reset and verification.
Hope this helps you. Feel free to write to us if you have any other questions.
